What is a letter of introduction by a teacher?

A teacher introduction letter is a correspondence from a teacher to a student’s caregiver that gives parents the opportunity to get to know who will instruct their child throughout the school year. The goal of the letter is to make sure the parents understand your objectives for the classroom and what your teaching style and philosophy is. It also helps them feel more at ease going into a new school year and desire to be active participants in their child’s education.

Many teachers either write a formal letter or send their letter via email, but the important thing is to make sure that parents receive your correspondence so you can start the year in a mutually beneficial partnership for the sake of the student.

This letter is often the first form of contact with parents and can influence how you work together through the school year. Just as it’s necessary to make a great first impression when you’re applying for a job, starting your professional relationship with parents on a good note can go a long way in the success of your time together throughout the school year.

How to write a letter of introduction as a teacher

Follow these steps when you’re writing your own letter of introduction as a teacher:

1. Address the parents

You can choose to customize your letter or email, sending a new correspondence to each parent where you use their name and their child’s name, or you may choose to send a more generic letter to all the parents for the students in your class. Either way, it’s important to address who you’re speaking to.

If you’re writing to individual parents, you can use openings like, “Dear Rodriguez Family,” “Dear Parents of Charlotte Smith” or “Dear Mr. and Mrs. Taylor.” If you address all parents in one correspondence, you can start it off with something like, “Dear Parents and Guardians of Room 2107.”

2. Introduce yourself right away

Although your name may be in your email address or on the envelope that contains your letter, make sure you immediately introduce yourself at the beginning of your correspondence. This will give your letter a more personalized touch that can help the parents feel more connected to you.

3. Write an attention-grabbing subject line

If you are sending your introduction letter via email, make sure your subject line will catch the parents’ attention. It’s important that they receive your letter — you don’t want to have it get lost in their email inbox. Consider including the name of the school or making a reference to the start of the new school year in your subject line. Chances are that during this time, parents are paying even more attention to any correspondence from the school, so they are probably keeping an eye out for emails just like yours.

You can explain how your philosophy is a benefit to your students and their learning experience.

6. Invite parents and guardians to be active participants

One goal of introduction letters is to let the parents know that a child’s success at school will benefit from their participation. Invite your audience’s involvement in the school’s activities, your meetings and their child’s schoolwork and progress.

7. Share your contact information

It’s essential that you share your contact information so parents can get in touch with you if they need to. They may want to schedule a conference, see how their child is performing or have a concern they want to discuss with you in private. Share your email and phone number, but make sure they also know when you’re available and the best method to use to contact you.

Tips for writing an introduction letter as a teacher

These tips can help you write an introduction letter to parents and guardians that is professional, clear and gets parents excited about the new school year:

  • .css-1g5t2dl{font-family:”Noto Sans”,”Helvetica Neue”,”Helvetica”,”Arial”,”Liberation Sans”,”Roboto”,”Noto”,sans-serif;font-weight:inherit;color:#595959;font-size:1.25rem;line-height:1.5;color:#2d2d2d;margin-bottom:0;font-size:1rem;margin-top:1.5rem;}html[lang=ja] .css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1rem;line-height:1.75;}@media screen and (min-width: 62em){.css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1.25rem;margin-top:2.5rem;}}

    Share your background: If you have many years of experience in the school system, consider limiting your background information to the past two schools you’ve worked at, including the current one. If you’re a newer graduate, speak about where you completed your training and what you’re passionate about.

  • .css-1g5t2dl{font-family:”Noto Sans”,”Helvetica Neue”,”Helvetica”,”Arial”,”Liberation Sans”,”Roboto”,”Noto”,sans-serif;font-weight:inherit;color:#595959;font-size:1.25rem;line-height:1.5;color:#2d2d2d;margin-bottom:0;font-size:1rem;margin-top:1.5rem;}html[lang=ja] .css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1rem;line-height:1.75;}@media screen and (min-width: 62em){.css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1.25rem;margin-top:2.5rem;}}

    Show enthusiasm: The role of a teacher is an important one for your students and their parents. Explore how you can make sure the parents and guardians know how passionate you are about teaching and excited about getting to know their child in the classroom.

  • .css-1g5t2dl{font-family:”Noto Sans”,”Helvetica Neue”,”Helvetica”,”Arial”,”Liberation Sans”,”Roboto”,”Noto”,sans-serif;font-weight:inherit;color:#595959;font-size:1.25rem;line-height:1.5;color:#2d2d2d;margin-bottom:0;font-size:1rem;margin-top:1.5rem;}html[lang=ja] .css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1rem;line-height:1.75;}@media screen and (min-width: 62em){.css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1.25rem;margin-top:2.5rem;}}

    Emphasize parent involvement: The more involved a parent is with their child’s schooling, the more the child should grow throughout the school year.

  • .css-1g5t2dl{font-family:”Noto Sans”,”Helvetica Neue”,”Helvetica”,”Arial”,”Liberation Sans”,”Roboto”,”Noto”,sans-serif;font-weight:inherit;color:#595959;font-size:1.25rem;line-height:1.5;color:#2d2d2d;margin-bottom:0;font-size:1rem;margin-top:1.5rem;}html[lang=ja] .css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1rem;line-height:1.75;}@media screen and (min-width: 62em){.css-1g5t2dl{font-size:1.25rem;margin-top:2.5rem;}}

    Don’t use technical language or jargon: Unless the parents and guardians you’re writing to are teachers themselves, they may not understand what you’re trying to say. Instead of using technical language or jargon, write with universal language that’s easy to understand.

    Dear parents,

    My name is Jennifer Brown, and I’ll be your child’s teacher for the upcoming school year! I am looking forward to getting to know you all and guiding your child through a successful third grade. First, allow me to share a little about myself. Teaching is my life’s passion, and I have been instructing students of all ages for 10 years. This is my fifth year working at Auburndale Elementary School, and I’ve previously worked at The Martinez School as one of the teachers responsible for the gifted program.

    My years of experience as a teacher have helped me form a teaching philosophy that guides how I help my students succeed in the classroom and beyond. I truly believe that their success begins with making them comfortable in the classroom, so I start our school year with plenty of activities so everyone can get to know one another. I encourage them to share their questions and opinions in an unbiased and open environment.

    I strive to create a space for students to explore their own learning styles, then I’m there to help develop their interests and guide their absorption of the material.

    It’s my goal to host regular parent/teacher conferences and make sure you’re aware of your child’s progress throughout the school year. I invite you to be an active participant in your child’s education, as this will only help him or her to continue to grow in knowledge.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to read this letter of introduction. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. My email is [email protected], which you can use to reach out to me most of the time, or feel free to dial extension x.4321 at the school during normal school hours.

    Best,

    Jennifer Brown

    Subject: Your Child’s New Teacher

    Dear parents and guardians,

    My name is Jennifer Brown, and I’ll be teaching your child in the fifth grade this upcoming school year. I am so excited to get to know you and your child throughout the year! I wanted to start by allowing you to learn a little more about me. I graduated from the University of San Diego with my Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education, then went on to earn my Master of Education (M.Ed.) with an emphasis in Instructional Design and Technology.

    My teaching philosophy is that every child should be introduced to the tools they need to establish their own learning style. Because of how important technology is in our world, and given my advanced degree, I incorporate technology whenever possible in the classroom while still leaving plenty of room to celebrate the students’ imaginations with specialized activities and hands-on experiences.

    Before the school year begins, I’ll send out a syllabus so you can become familiar with what your child will learn at various points throughout the school year. I’ll also include my office hours so you can schedule a time and date to meet with me should you need to address any concerns or want to discuss your child’s progress. I hope you’ll take advantage of this as a child’s success in school is directly related to how involved their parents are.

    Thank you for your time in reading this email. If you need me for anything, or if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly at extension 4321 or reply directly to this email. My hours are normally Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., although I watch my email inbox after business hours for any important correspondence.

    I’m looking forward to meeting you and your child in person!

    Sincerely,

    Jennifer Brown
