Why do employers ask this question?
Employers often ask this question because they want to see how you react in unexpected situations. Many people practice answering interview questions before they meet the interviewer, so this question often compels them to think differently about their answers. This question may also allow interviewers to gauge how you interact with others.

How to answer “Tell me a joke”
Interviewers from all industries often ask these questions, so there’s no position-specific method to answering them. Here are some steps you may consider when preparing for this interview question:
1. Keep your jokes short
Interviews typically occur on a schedule, so telling short jokes may ensure that your interview stays within time constraints. Short jokes also typically allow you to return to serious topics quicker and maintain the interviewer’s interest in your answer. Many people find that memorizing short jokes is easier than memorizing longer or more complex jokes.
2. Tell clean jokes
Jokes free of sensitive language and topics often maintain your professional image and attitude. It also usually ensures that you show respect for the interviewer. This means avoiding jokes about someone’s race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and general appearance. If your joke is appropriate for children, it’s most likely appropriate for the workplace.

3. Consider your audience
Considering your audience when telling jokes means thinking about jokes that may make the interviewer feel good. For example, a joke about a teacher’s success may make an interviewer at a school or tutoring center laugh. This may include a joke such as, “Why does the teacher always wear sunglasses during school? Because their class is so bright!” It’s also important to make sure that you tell the joke to the right person so that they may understand it. If you’re talking to an HR professional, they may not understand your joke about chemical engineering.

4. Keep the subjects simple
Keeping joke subjects simple means telling jokes that don’t require extensive knowledge of a particular subject. Avoiding jokes that require advanced knowledge of a complex subject often ensures that the interviewer understands the joke, since you may not know them and their level of knowledge about the subject. For example, this joke makes a simple scenario out of the often complex subject of engineering: “How do you tell an engineer to do something you want them to do? Tell them it’s impossible.”
5. Share a pun
If you face challenges thinking of a good joke, puns usually suffice as a second option. Puns are jokes that use different meanings of a word. Many people enjoy puns because they’re often clever and witty. Puns are also usually very short, which may benefit you in a timed interview. Here’s a short list of example puns you may consider memorizing as a second option:

6. Talk about relevant events
Another option for telling a joke is talking about relevant events in either the local or national region. You may relate a joke to the interviewer, or even something about pop culture. For example, you can tell a joke about a sports team that hasn’t seen much success in the current playing season. Make sure your joke involves widely known knowledge about an event so the interviewer may understand it. Some interviewers may not know about some extremely recent events, so they may not understand jokes about them yet.
Example answers to “Tell me a joke”
Sometimes reviewing sample answers helps some interviewees prepare for their own interviews. Here are five example answers from different industry professionals to this interview question:
Example 1: project manager
“Why can’t vampires work as project managers?
They refuse to meet stakeholders.”
Example 2: construction worker
“A dog looks for a job and stumbles across an open construction site with a hiring sign. He goes to the foreman and says he can work. The foreman asks the dog if he has any experience with carpentry and construction. The dog replies, “I’ve got a lot of experience with woofing!””
Example 3: programmer
“An optimist says, “The glass is half full,”
A pessimist says, “The glass is half empty,”
A programmer says, “The glass is twice as large as necessary.””
Example 4: artist
“What is the biggest difference between a painter and an electrician? An electrician washes his hands after he goes to the bathroom, but a painter washes his hands before.”
Example 5: doctor
“A pirate goes to the doctor, worried that the moles on his back might be cancerous. The doctor inspects them.
“It’s ok,” he says. “They’re benign.”
The pirate replies “Check ’em again matey, I think there be at least ten!””
